How to actually do New Orleans well in 3 days

What to book ahead, what to skip, and why late February is the sweet spot for the city.

⚜️

After Mardi Gras, before the crowds

Fat Tuesday 2027 is February 9 — we arrive ten days later, after the parades but before spring festival season. Expect calmer streets, easier reservations, and the city at its most livable.

🍽️

Dinner reservations

Reserve marquee spots 2–3 weeks out via Resy or OpenTable: Commander's Palace, Cochon, Compère Lapin, Brennan's, Pêche. Walk-ins work at most neighborhood po'boy and oyster counters.

🎺

Frenchmen Street, not Bourbon

For live jazz and brass bands, head to Frenchmen Street in the Marigny — The Spotted Cat, d.b.a., Snug Harbor. Bourbon Street is worth one walk-through; Frenchmen is worth the evening.

🚋

Streetcar from the hotel door

The St. Charles line runs right past the Residence Inn — ride it uptown through the Garden District and past Audubon Park. Single rides are inexpensive; a Jazzy Pass covers a full day.

🎖️

The National WWII Museum

Consistently ranked among the top museums in the country and a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Book timed entry online and allow at least three hours.

🥐

Beignets — go early or late

Café du Monde's Jackson Square location runs a line most of the day. Go before 8am or after 9pm, or try Café Beignet on Royal Street for a shorter wait.

🌤️

February weather

Typically highs in the mid-60s°F and lows in the upper 40s. Pack layers and a light rain jacket — afternoons are often perfect for walking.

✈️

Getting to the hotel

MSY is about 25–35 minutes by rideshare or taxi to the Central Business District. The Airport Express bus (Route 202) runs downtown for a few dollars if you're traveling light.

For physicians certified by other ABMS specialty boards, we recommend contacting your certifying board directly to determine whether your participation may qualify under any self-reporting or alternate pathways.
